The main cause of gum diseases is the accumulation of microbial plaque and tartar in the mouth. Tartar is the mineralized form of bacteria in the mouth combined with food residues and saliva. Tartar contains millions of bacteria and causes gum inflammation with bleeding, redness, and swelling in the adjacent gums, while in advanced forms, it causes loss of bone tissue supporting the tooth, loosening of teeth, and tooth loss. Therefore, our patients should prevent tartar formation primarily through regular oral care, tooth brushing, flossing, and the use of interdental brushes.
During regular dental checkups, when we see tartar accumulation and gum inflammation, we clean the tartar as the initial stage of treatment. Regular teeth cleaning done at certain intervals does not damage teeth; on the contrary, it is an important step in preventing or treating gum problems.
